RECO

A

Reel 20 AUG 00

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE LORD GEORGE FRANCIS HAMILTON,

Her Majesty's Secretary of State for India.

Simla, the 19th July 1900.

MY LORD,

WE have the honour to acknowledge the receipt, with your Des- patch of the 31st May 1900, No. 88 (Financial), of the recent correspondence with the Colonial Office regarding the supply of subsidiary silver coin for Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements.

2. Your Lordship has already been informed in our telegram of the 15th June 1900 of the inability of the Indian Mints to meet the immediate requirements of these colonies. It is possible, however, though not by any means certain, that the pressure occasioned by our own coinage and the conversion operations undertaken for certain Native States may be only temporary, and may not extend beyond the current financial year.

3. Accordingly, if by March or April next these colonies have not made other permanent arrrangements and still wish to have their subsidiary coinage executed by the Indian Mints, we suggest that the matter may be again referred to us as we may possibly be then in a position to undertake any work that may

be required.

4. The terms on which the coinage of 10 and 5 cent pieces could be under- taken are stated in our Financial Secretary's letter of the 12th August 1898, No. 3533-A., a copy of which formed one of the enclosures of Your Lordship's despatch. We may add that there would be no objection to including bronze coin in any arrangements that may be concluded.

We have the honour to be,

MY LORD,

Your Lordship's most obedient, humble Servants,

(Signed) CURZON OF KEDLESTON.

E. H. H. COLLEN.

A. C. TREVOR.
